8.26.07 - Cycle to the Sun - Maui, Hawaii
|

|
The Cycle
to the Sun Race raises funds for Kai
Lima O Maui, an organization dedicated to enhancing
disadvantaged peoples lives, providing job training
and placement for over 50 years.
The race is Maui's premier cycling event and it's brutal,
especially for a Kentucky boy used to rollers. Covering
just under 36 miles, the race begins in the town of Paia
at sea level and climbs 10,005 feet up the Haleakala Crater,
Maui's dormant eastern volcano.
The weather turned out great, warm at the start, almost
chilly at the top, with no rain.

Riders Note: I was on vacation
and found the race was scheduled when I happened to be on the
island. Staying in Hana, it was not a convenient place to reach
the race start. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to have breakfast,
which made it a long day. But it was awesome to finish this challenging
race and the views were amazing. Thanks to the volunteers for
their hospitiality and professionalism. I can't wait to do it
again... I think!
And special thanks to Donnie at the Maui
Cyclery for renting me a great bike. If your in Maui, check
them out in Haiku.
